Lectures at SUMRICA School in Uzbekistan

It was a unique experience for Road Safety Pioneers experts Mohsen Fallah Z. and Ali Zayerzadeh to give lectures at Urgench University, Uzbekistan  during the SUMRICA (Sustainable Mobility Research in Central Asia) School managed by Technische Universität Berlin.

On the first day, SUMRICA scholars presented their research results during their stay at TU Berlin and Mohsen also explained his project results on providing safer routes to school for students. (A case study in Tehran)

They had different lectures on “Active Modes of Transport and Traffic Safety” and Mohsen tried to shed light on the topic that why promoting safe walking and cycling is a crucial approach for every city. With the help of best practices and examples all around the world, school students were asked to identify the most important obstacles that exist against an enjoyable city for walkers and cyclists in their city.

Apart from our topic, 2 other working groups lecturers were working on “Accessibility, Mixed Land-use, TOD” and “SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning) and Public Transport”. Field visits were also some part of the program and using the World Café method, school students were asked to share their ideas on these 3 topics in a short period of time.

When we have a plan to reach a goal such as promoting the walking and cycling in a city or improve transport safety in a community apart from changing the infrastructure or enacting new laws or stricter enforcement, public awareness campaigns are useful tools to help these integrated activities work in a more efficient way.
On the second day, Ali tried to first define the terms “Advocacy” and “Campaign” and explained what are the main elements of a successful campaign such as power-mapping, build partnership and monitoring and evaluation.
During the second part of his presentation as Road Safety Pioneers NGO director he pictured some practical examples of related campaign activities they had run in Iran regarding the promotion of safe active transport including asking famous footballers and artists to support the campaign and delivering the signed petitions by public to demand safe active transport needs to decision-makers , etc.

After 3 days of lectures, RSP experts tried to write an action plan about promoting safe walking and cycling for the Urgench City 2030. With the help of team members, we defined the Urgench 2030 goal, 3 SMART objectives, possible funding resources, short-term and long-term actions.

Also to make it possible by building strong partnerships, we used a power-interest matrix to identify who are the main role players to implement this draft action plan and which stakeholders have priority to be engaged. Special Thanks to hosts and sponsors for their support.
